Title: YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE
Year: 2022
Medium: Digital, using DALL-E 2 and Notch
Location: Toronto ON Canada
This piece was created during the HXOUSE Labs Neural Artists two day workshop.
Inspired by George Orwell's 1984, this video piece focuses on the constant surveillance the citizens of Oceania are under and it begs the question, is the surveillance we experience in today's society any different? Is it more passive as we voluntarily share intimate details of our lives on social media? Or is it that ignorance, on our part, is bliss? Using text to image software DALL-E 2, the focal image of a solar system featuring an eye at the centre was generated while in-painting within the program ensured a clear central pupil and iris. Notch was used to create the video effects. A realistic soundscape of a quickened heart beat, heavy breathing, and running footsteps were layered in Notch to contribute to the feeling of panic and discomfort that this piece aims to achieve, mimicking the feeling that accompanies the knowledge that you are being watched and you can't get away. This piece was intended to be uncomfortable to view in order to provoke an examination of our willing participation in surveillance.
